Webinar: SFIA, apprenticeships, and work-based learning - University of Strathclyde

SFIA User story from the University of Strathclyde. Join Dr Fraser Macdonald, Teaching Fellow in the Computer and Information Sciences Department of the University of Strathclyde as he explores an apprentice-centred approach to WBL utlising the SFIA.

The University of Strathclyde delivers a wide range of graduate and degree apprenticeship programmes. Working in partnership with employers, these programmes provide learners with significant workplace experience while working towards a degree. Formal work-based learning (WBL) is a key component of all programmes.

In this webinar, Dr Fraser Macdonald, explores an apprentice-centred approach to WBL utilising SFIA. This approach has been designed to provide apprentices with a structured WBL experience which allows them to gain valuable career management skills and knowledge as well as demonstrating competence gained throughout the apprenticeship. It is now in its 6th year of use.

The use of SFIA helps provide a clear structure for planning of skills development and recording of practice. As a global digital skills and competency framework, its use in WBL also benefits apprentices in providing exposure to the framework at an early stage in their careers, providing a learning opportunity in and of itself.

The webinar will cover:
  • The overall WBL approach utilised, including assessment and standardisation
  • Use of personal development planning in empowering the apprentice
  • Use of a portfolio of evidence for demonstration of competence
  • Application of SFIA in providing structure and progression in competency demonstration
  • Future directions in this area
