University of Strathclyde Webinar: Key insights on SFIA in work-based learning

  • Thank you to everyone who joined last month's webinar with Dr Fraser Macdonald from the University of Strathclyde discussing "SFIA, Apprenticeships, and Work-based Learning."
  • The University's approach demonstrates how SFIA can be effectively integrated into work-based learning programmes, combining academic study with workplace experience.
  • Their innovative model uses SFIA to structure skills development and competency assessment, employing the STARC framework and providing early career exposure to industry-standard frameworks.
  • The four-year apprenticeship programme combines workplace experience with university study, incorporating regular personal development planning and portfolio-based assessment.
  • For those who missed it, you can access the recording and explore how SFIA supports both technical and professional skills development. → Watch the recording, view the slides and case study materials

Updates to SFIA Licensing and Branding

All use of SFIA is covered by a SFIA Licence to maintain the integrity of the framework and support its ongoing development. The licence ensures that SFIA remains a trusted, industry-led resource and sustains its value for the global SFIA community.

What is not changing

    • SFIA remains free of charge for internal use — individuals and most organisations can apply SFIA within their teams or for personal use under a free licence.
    • Larger organisations are expected to take out a licence to support the sustainability of SFIA. The licence fee is modest and helps cover operational costs.
    • Commercial use requires a licence — organisations incorporating SFIA into commercial products or providing services based on, or mapped to, SFIA pay an annual fee. These licensees, including Accredited Consultants and Partners, play a key role in supporting SFIA adoption worldwide.

Changes

    • To make SFIA easier to access and implement, we are clarifying and improving existing licensing arrangements. This may include modest fee adjustments.
    • The SFIA Foundation's brand assets, including logos and graphical- and text-based materials, are core to its identity. We will be providing clear usage guidelines to support all users in applying these assets appropriately.
