#1496 New skill for audio-visual systems design change request resolved
Existing skills don't cover design activities for complicated AV systems (e.g. lecture theatres, medical imaging environments, conferencing environments)
AV systems design can cover the design and integration of different unrelated systems (including IT systems, OT systems like building control systems, and AV) to address technical requirements , and user experience requirements. This includes configuration and component selection, and often includes selection of vendors/partners to ensure cost-effective and reliable systems that can be maintained. Some potential overlap more generically with a generic IoT systems design.

What we decided
What's next, and why we're not adding new AV skills
We're looking at three ways to make SFIA easier to use for AV professionals: adding "audio-visual" as a recognised term on the relevant existing skills, publishing example role profiles (such as AV Systems Designer, AV Installation Engineer, and AV Support Engineer) showing how those skills combine in practice, and staying open to talking with AV industry bodies about closer alignment in future.
We're not creating brand new AV skills right now. SFIA already covers the underlying work through skills like hardware design, network design, systems integration, and technical support; AV is a context those skills apply to, not a gap in the framework. Adding a new skill for every industry context would make SFIA harder to use, not easier. If that changes, we'll revisit it.
