The global skills and competency framework for the digital world

#69 Digital Entrepreneurship change request deferred

This is a request to stretch the boundaries of SFIA to encompass the skill needed to identify a business opportunity using novel digital technologies, and then acquire and deploy the necessary resources required for its commercial exploitation.

Entrepreneurship is the process of designing, launching, and running a new business which is often initially a small business.

So this skill is related to innovation but a more encompassing skill focussed on developing a commercial entity.

The exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities may include:

  • developing a business plan, hiring the human resources, acquiring financial and material resources, providing leadership, being responsible for both the venture's success or failure

Although often associated with small / micro business - many large organisations (private and public) actively support and encourage entrepreneurial ventures (e.g. digital garage at Aviva) often deliberately set up as a standalone venture from the parent organisaton,

There is also the consideration of project based entrepreneurship - creation of temporary organizations for purposes such as developing a commercial software product or service.

A reason not to consider this a separate skill would be that we can assemble all the components required from existing SFIA skills. This is worth exploring but I think the "sum" of entrepreneurship is "greater than its parts" and SFIA skills written using the terminology of mature enterprise organisations are not a great match to the nature of entrepreneurship.

It could be argued that this skill sits outside of SFIA's scope - that is cetainly true of previous versions of SFIA but SFIA7 provides the opportunity to re-evaluate the scope.
