The global skills and competency framework for the digital world

#1475 RSCH Research - Modification of skill name for enhanced clarity change request pending

The proposals is to change the skill name to assist users in accurately identifying the appropriate skill. The current designation "Research" frequently leads to misunderstandings among new users. It is often perceived as a general activity of 'looking up information' or conducting basic investigations into a topic.

Rationale

  • The "Research" skill in SFIA is more sophisticated and structured than its current name suggests. This skill involves a comprehensive, systematic process for generating new knowledge. Key stages of this process include data gathering, innovation, experimentation, evaluation, and dissemination.(e.g. published papers, journals, seminars, books)

Applicability

  • This skill is broadly applicable across various sectors. It is integral to numerous research forms, including academic studies, public sector policy analysis, and commercial as well as technological R&D.
  • The skill extends well beyond mere information retrieval; it demands critical analysis, development of methodologies, and the ability to contribute novel insights to a field of study.

Problem Statement

  • In the context of a list of SFIA skills; the existing name may lead to confusion, as it seems to imply a similarity with general information searching or basic investigation, which are actually addressed by other SFIA skills and attributes.

Solution

  1. To avoid ambiguity and ensure better recognition of the skill's scope, a name change is necessary. Proposed alternatives include:
    • "Formal Research"
    • "Formal Structured Research"
  2. Update guidance notes to better describe the applicability of the skill

Proposed change applies to Formal research

Maybe to name it Applied Research.

By definition, Applied Research is a type of scientific inquiry that focuses on developing practical solutions to real-world problems. It involves the use of existing knowledge, theories, and techniques to address specific problems or challenges in a particular field or industry. (https://researchmethod.net/applied-research/)

Under this definition, Applied Research is another good candidate for the name of this skill.

I would avoid 'Applied Research' and favour 'Formal Research', mostly because what I think this change is trying to get across to the general reader is that the skill involves a structured approach to research, not an informal or casual approach. I don't think the term 'applied' helps to foster that understanding whereas 'formal' does.
